Thanks for finally saying what we all should be thinking. Many times a popular idea with scant evidence gets thrown out and science and the community at large just blindly follow. I don't know how the extinction happened. We need to really understand that what went on in history is just that, history. I admire people that study history through science (geologists, physicists, archeologists) but unless we invent a time machine, it's going to be hard to know for sure.
